Panasonic Lumix FZ80 (FZ82) - Video tutorials by Graham Houghton

Whether you choose to take conventional landscapes, macro images, portraits or even create images using torch light there is certainly some element of image making which will appeal to everyone.

You don't need the most expensive camera equipment to enjoy this fascinating hobby and in many ways the simpler cameras allow you to concentrate entirely on the image creation rather than spending a considerable amount of time reckoning with the camera controls and menus of more complicated cameras.

Graham Houghton

After a lot of emails requesting some video tutorial support for the Panasonic Lumix FZ80(82 in N America) I decided to purchase one, put it through its paces, write a review and if the results were good enough create a series of tutorial videos outlining how to get the best images and video from this super-zoom bridge camera. Firstly I have established that purchasers of the camera are primarily interested in the images from the long focal lengths and image quality is less of a concern. The camera has several compromises in its design and operation. The idea behind these tutorials is to enlighten you on these and show you how to minimise these effects when taking your images and video clips. This is the introductory video. Part one will cover all aspects of shooting in the fully auto iA and iA+ modes.

I get frequent requests for help by viewers as to which of the Panasonic bridge cameras to purchase. I generally don't make recommendations as so much depends upon the type of images that will be captured, the use of those images, environmental conditions that the camera might be used under and whether video recording is likely to feature as part of the decision. Although this isn't a lab-based test I hope that there is sufficient detail to allow potential purchasers to come to a decision. From shooting in very low light levels at various ISO settings to capturing landscapes at various focal lengths the images show what each of the cameras can achieve. The images are all captured with the cameras set back to factory default with no parameter adjustment to the JPEG processing. No post-processing of the images apart from adding screen captions. I have also added the comparison to the Canon EOS M50 as its size and weight may be a consideration for some people concerned about the FZ1000 and FZ2000/2500 cameras

In this video, I take a look at some of the options available for shooting with flash. From the pop-up flash to external optical and radio triggered units and the choices for adding flash diffusers to create a softer light source. Concentrating mainly on flower/insect photography though the concepts are equally relevant for portrait photography and tabletop images.

n part one of this series I'm taking a look at the fully automatic iA+ mode (the camera default). This is the most suitable mode for new users to get familiar with how the camera is set up and how it delivers pretty reasonable images. There are some limitations using this mode and I try to point these out as well as some hints and tips for capturing great stills. Plenty of practical illustrations of real world photographic subjects and you will see how they are captured and any of the issues to be aware of. in part 2 I will take a look at the focus modes in more detail, how the Program auto (P) mode works and why its better to use this rather than the iA+ mode. An ebook to accompany the series will be available soon.

From the pop-up flash to external optical and radio triggered units and the choices for adding flash diffusers to create a softer light source. Concentrating mainly on flower/insect photography though the concepts are equally relevant for portrait photography and tabletop images.

Continuing with this new series I first of all take a further look at the autofocus modes available in the iA+ mode and then look at the advantages of shooting in the Program Auto mode (P Mode). Considering aperture/shutter speed selection, ISO selection and focus modes available. More information will be available in the ebook that will accompany this series.

In this video, a continuation of shooting with flash with the Panasonic Lumix Bridge Cameras, I show you how to take flash pictures using the inbuilt, pop-up flash, and with the use of simple diffusers and reflectors, you can control the shadows created by the flash. I also look at using optical slave flashes to use with the simpler cameras with no wireless commander flash (like the FZ200). I show the use of coloured gels to add accents to your images.

In the final part of this mini-series I look at shooting video with the FZ80/82. From the selection of the correct shutter speed for "cinematic" look and the use of ND filters to enable the correct exposure when using these lower than normal shutter speeds. I also look at getting better audio by using external recorders to overcome the fact that this camera doesn't have a mic input jack.

In this video I take a look at the concept of shooting in the Aperture or Shutter priority modes where aperture is used to control the depth of field (or front to back sharpness) in an image and shutter speed is used to control subject motion blur. However because of the fact that this lens, unlike the FZ300, does not have a constant aperture (stays the same value even if the lens is zoomed to a longer focal length) the use of these methods is very limited as I point out during the shoot. For this reason I do advocate shootingP mode and choosing an aperture/shutter speed to create the image look that you desire. I also look at the challenge of low light shooting with this camera.

In this video, I discuss some of the ways to improve the image quality of the images that are extracted (in camera or in a video editing program) from the 4K photo mode MP4 video file. It is also a test of video streaming from the Panasonic FZ1000 II and capturing with a 4k capture device over USB-C to a mac book pro, in preparation for more ambitious presentations.

Continuing this series for new users of the Panasonic Lumix FZ80(82) I explain how the camera metering works and what to watch out for in some tricky lighting situations and the go on to show how the manual exposure mode is used.

How to modify the DCC6 battery box so that it shows up the external battery charge status. It's an easy modification, the hardest part is opening the battery box to gain access to the little PCB inside. Recorded using 2 cameras, HDMI switch and OBS software. I'm still learning and modifying the process. In this video, the mistake was not having the audio lock to the camera with the lavalier mic instead of switching audio to the selected camera view.

The final installment in my recent revisitation of the Panasonic Lumix FZ80/82 bridge camera. Some final thoughts and a demonstration of the kind of quality that you can expect to achieve using this camera.

Continuing the series with a look at the requirements for shooting video with this camera. Selection of recording mode, recording quality and memory card is discussed. Looking at the need for stabilisation to prevent "micro jitter" or "jello". In part 5b I will be discussing white balance, exposure external audio and lighting options.

From a number of questions relating to how to shoot good video clips with the Panasonic 1-2/3 inch sensor cameras like the travel zooms and bridge cameras like the FZ80/82/FZ200/300/330 I have put together my explanation of the necessary steps to set up the camera to achieve the best possible video files from these cameras.

Continuation of the previous video looking at recording video with the FZ80/82 camera. In this video a slightly more detailed look at why we set a shutter speed equal to twice the camera frame rate (the 180 degree shutter rule). Choosing the natural photo style and flattening the tone curve to maximise highlight to shadow regions captured (for post processing to achieve our desired look) . Manual white balance to get neutral colours in your video clips.

Are you having problems with autofocus with Panasonic Lumix Bridge or Mirrorless cameras? If so, then there are a couple of things that you really need to understand how the autofocus methods actually work. What you think that you may have set as the autofocus target may not be in fact what the camera is using. In this video, I show you how to check your AF accuracy and demonstrate some ways to improve how you define the AF targets to get more accurate focus points.

How to set up and use the single point colour mode on Panasonic Lumix Bridge and M4/3 cameras. This is a useful, in camera, JPEG operation which allows you to select and isolate one single colour from you scene.

In this demonstration of the time lapse and stop motion animation features of the FZ80/82 I show the necessary steps to create the two videos. I'm no expert in either of these fields so the video is just the sequence of how to use the features - you will probably be more capable of designing puppets etc for your own animations

After over a year with this camera and producing tutorials and a user's guide book I thought I would revisit the camera as it has overtaken all other cameras for both downloads of the user's guide and for YouTube views. It's obvious this camera has appeal to many users but I do get lots of requests for help in getting the images to look good straight out of the camera. In the first video, I look at the camera and some simple modifications to help the usability and some of the settings that I use to ensure getting the best image quality out of the camera. In the next video I will look at the benefits of shooting RAW with this camera and for those who don't like post-processing editing a look at a program that requires just one click to process your RAW file - and it works!

A dedicated video showing the accessories that you can use to create some great close-up images using the FZ80/82 camera.

In this video I look at some of the options available in video, like the ability to perform a focus pull, and the use of close up lenses for stills and video. The reference to studio lighting will now be covered in teh accessory video (part 7)

Looking at some of the reasons that your images may not meet your expectations! Looking at Aperture effects, ISO & noise effects and the use of long focal length zoom settings on image quality.

1-2/3 inch sensors, like those in the FZ80/82, FZ200, FZ300/330, do suffer from image noise as the ISO is increased. In this video I show a technique that will allow ISO's as high as 3200 - even in lo light- to be used and output some extremely low image noise. It even enhanced images at the ISO 80/100 values. I also show a way to get long exposures (up to 60 seconds) with the FZ80/82 which is normally limited to 4 seconds.

Firstly apologies for the distorted sound- my recently repaired FZ2000 is showing the audio level is correct at -6dB but the output is obviously far too high - will need to go back (again!) In this video I take a look at some accessories that you may want to consider to enhance the experience with the camera.

Looking at some of the reasons that your images may not meet your expectations! Looking at Aperture effects, ISO & noise effects and the use of long focal length zoom settings on image quality.

In this video I look at the use of the in camera histogram and 18% grey cards for getting the correct exposure in tricky lighting conditions that usually "fool" the exposure metering circuit causing under or over exposure.

Some users have by accident set the Direct Focus to ON with a result that it is no longer possible to set ISO or white balance using the navigation buttons. In this video I show, in a little bit more detail, how to set the selection of the focus area by using function button FN2 and how the buttons are programmed in the REC mode.

By using the camera's own RAW converter in this video I show how it is possible to create separate JPEG files from the same RAW file to be to set the optimum parameters used for future images. Using one RAW image takes away any subjectiveness if the original scene brightness etc changes.

In this video I answer questions posed by viewers about the menu options and back button focus

A requested video showing the video quality of the FZ300 and the FZ82 cameras. I've also added some stills to show the zoom reach of each camera. As the FZ82 doesn't have the same photostyles as the FZ300 (the Cinelike D & V) I decided to film each using the Natural photostyle to get as much tonal range as possible.
